HISTORY

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. A sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women, the Sorority currently has over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization's Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development Educational Development International Awareness and Involvement Physical and Mental Health Political Awareness and Involvement

The Sorority was founded in 1913 by 22 students at Howard University. These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to the underserved; educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities.

Franklin Tri-County Alumnae Chapter was chartered on December 7, 1985. Since its inception the members have been committed to serving the community with innovative programs and projects. Each year the chapter implements a full program agenda that encompasses each aspect of the Sorority's five point programmatic thrust. The chapter currently has 39 members. All are registered voters and hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree. Approximately 15% of the membership holds graduate degrees.

The chapter service area currently includes: Franklin City, Southampton County, Isle of Wight County, Surry County and Sussex County.

LEADERSHIP

OUR PROGRAMS

Since its founding in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. The Clinton Alumnae Chapter strives to implement programs that fall under our National Guidelines.

  • Educational Development

Each year, local Delta Chapters conduct projects designed to address the community's concerns about excellence in education. On a national level, Delta's pursuit of educational excellence takes the form of scholarships and grants to individual members and local chapters.

  • International Awareness and Involvement

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has always been a proponent of helping those who are in need, especially in third world countries.

  • Physical and Mental Health

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has programs designed to address health education programs and health fairs. Delta also supports medical research that examines illnesses that affect specific segments of the country's population.

  • Political Awareness and Involvement

Though non-partisan in nature and purpose, Delta understands the importance of and the need for an informed electorate. Delta's concern for the public's "need-to-know" and the enfranchisement of all Americans has been the philosophical basis for public service programs in this area.

Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It's important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It's the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.
